Alopecia Areata (Extreme hair loss)

My mother had a huge patch of hair fall out of her head, she though she developed cancer or something; we later found out it was a skin condition called "Alopecia Areata"

Alopecia Causes and Treatments

First of all, what is alopecia? Alopecia is a fairly common skin condition that causes large patches of hair to fall out, and if left untreated, can lead to total hair loss. We asked the dermatologist what caused alopecia; she said the causes of alopecia is unknown... but the doctor speculated that the bodies immune system sometimes mistakes healthy cells as problem cells, and then attacks and destroys the healthy body tissue in the scalp.

My mother is not the only one with this condition. It is reported that about 150,000 people currently have it, and chances are they got it from one of their family members. You can get alopecia if you are a man, woman, or child; major trauma or illness can set off this condition. There are several forms of alopecia, some will make only small patches of hair fall out, others will cause total baldness, worst case is a total loss of body hair. Here are the names and symptoms of alopecia:

  • Condition: "Alopecia Areata" -- this is where small patches of hair fall out, usually from the scalp, but you can also lose hair from your beard or genital areas

  • Condition: "Alopecia Totalis" -- this is when you have a complete loss of hair from your head.

  • Condition: "Alopecia Universalis" -- this condition will cause you body hair to completely fall out within 6 months.

What Are The Symptoms of Alopecia

Usually it takes about six months for symptoms to appear. They may include itching or burning at the site of the alopecia, but you may not have any symptoms other than hair loss. Most patients report that the condition began when one or two patches of hair began to fall out. Other patients report loss of hair on the face.

Will You Go Bald?

Probably not, unless you have the alopecia totalis version of the condition. If you do have alopecia totalis, yes, you will lose all your hair. The good news is, bald is in now. What if you only have regular alopecia? Well, that's up in the air; if hair loss is not too bad, the hair may regrow in a few months. Are there any therapies available for this condition? You may try steroid injections under the scalp, minoxidil, light therapy, or if that doesn't work, there is always natural wigs.
