Canker sores - Aphthous Ulcer
Oh my, nothing hurts like a canker sore... Everytime you open your mouth, they crack, and bleed, and dry, and then crack again. The last time I had a canker sore my sister kept trying to make me laugh, and crack that sore. She is mean, what can I say...
Aphthous Ulcers - What Causes Canker Sores
A canker sore is usually caused by a viral infection. The condition creates a painful, open sore on the side of the mouth. Canker sores can be either white, or yellow, and are usually surrounded by a bright red area. While they may look bad, a canker sore is not cancerous, not is it a fever blister.
Canker Sores - The Causes, And Risk Factors
Canker sores may be caused by problems with the body's immune system. Canker sores may be triggered by certain vitamins and minerals, emotional stress, food allergies; women get then after menstrual periods, and they may be caused by hormonal changes in the body as well. Canker sores may run in the family. So if your parents got them, you may get them too.
Everyone may develop a canker sore at one time or another, and women are more likely to get canker sores, more often than men.
Canker Sore -- Symptoms
A canker sore can appear in many places, but usually canker sores appear inside the cheeks, lips, or tongue; and they can appear at the base of the gums. You may get more than one canker sore at a time, which later develop into a full blown canker sore.
Aphthous ulcer (canker) pain usually goes away in about a week, however, it can take as long as a month for a canker sore to completely heal. We recommend rinsing the mouth out with warm salt water to speed the healing process.
Testing for Canker Sores
You can usually handle the average canker sore on your own, you won't need to run to the doctors... but if the canker sores continue to cause you problems, ie: if they persist or return time and again, you should have your doctor run some tests to look for other conditions. You may actually have "erythema multiforme" or other herpes type conditions.
Warning for Canker Sores
Got a canker sore? You have to be careful what you eat, for instance you should try not spicy foods. Again, we recommend rinsing with warm, NOT HOT, salt water, or you can use a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water.
I found another remedy for canker sores online, they say to mix half Milk of Magnesia and half Benadryl - the liquid allergy medicine. The online source says "Swish this Benadryl, Milk of Magnesia mixture in your mouth for about 1 minute, and spit.
If things get worse, prescriptions may be required. Options include "Fluocinonide Gel which goes by the name of "Lidex" or you can remove canker sores with "Chlorhexidine Gluconate which comes in a minty flavored mouthwash.
