Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome is a serious medical condition which creates skin cancer (and deformaties) in patients around puberty. Other names for this condition are: Gorlin Syndrome, and Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome.
Basal cell nevus syndrome is not just one condition, it is a group of medical defects that involve the skin, the nervous system, the eyes, endocrine glands, and the patients bones. One symptom of this condition is unusual facial appearance.
About the time puberty hits, patients with this condition will begin to change in appearance. It may begin with a broadening of the nose, a protruding brow, lower jaw sticks out, wide set eyes, and basal cell carcinoma is also reported.
Later the basal cell nevus syndrome will affect the central nervous system causing mental retardation, blindness, deafness, seizures, and even later, curvature of the spine. We recommend running tests to see if you have brain tumors, fluid on the brain, or cysts that grow alone the jaw line. It's best to schedule an MRI, and an Echocardiogram of the heart to check for other defects.
Basal Cell is a slow growing form of skin cancer. It is important to remove any basal cell growths before they spread to other parts of the body. To find out more about Basal Cell, see this cancer web site.
