Behcet's Syndrome

A new patient came into our offices recently; the skin on the front of the patients legs were inflamed with raised, red nodules... I suspected Behcet's syndrome which later tests confirmed.

The cause of Behcet's syndrome is unknown, and it has several symptoms depending on which part of the body in affected. My patient had the skin form of the disease, while other patients might have ulcers (cankers) in the mouth.

The typical patient with "Behcet's Syndrome" usually has severalsymptoms that include recurring crops of mouth ulcers (aphthous ulcers). These ulcers may also appear in the genital areas, or may appear around the pupil of the eye.

My patient was originally from Greece, which pointed to the Bahcet's Syndrome diagnosis. You see, the disease is more frequent in patients from the Mediterranean than in other groups.

Explain: Behcet's syndrome

Behcet's syndrome involves inflammation of of the body including the back of the eyes, the brain, the elbow and knee joints, skin, and the bowels.

A person with Behcet's of the mouth report painful reoccuring crops of canker sores ranging in size from tiny to about 20mm.

Behcet's (inflammation of the eye) involves the front of the eye causing uveitis, or the back of the eye causing retinitis, both of these conditions can lead to blindness. Behcet's eye syndrome includes pain and blurred vision, and patients also report pain when looking at bright lights. Have your ophthalmologist take a look into your retinas etc to check for this condition.

When Behcet's affects the arteries, they become inflamed and can lead to stroke, or even death. The inflammation can cause large veins to develop blood clots which can cause a pulmonary embolism.

If Behcet's infects the brain, it can cause headaches, fever, and neck pain. It can also cause meninitis and damage to the nervous system resulting in confusion, and later coma.

When Behcet's infects the joints, it can lead to swelling, and stiffness of the joints. Most often it is the knees, and elbows that suffer the most damage, however your wrists, ankles, and finger joints may also be inflamed.

My patient has the skin form of the behcet's disease. Her conditon spontaneously appeared on the top of her legs as raised, tender, reddish spots.

By the way, I did mention Behcet's can affect the genital areas... in men, the condition affects the penis or scrotum, and in women the vulva can become inflamed, and leave scars.
