The skin condition known as a yeast infection is technically called "Candidiasis". There are 20 different types of Candida, under certain conditions, they become so numerous they cause infections.
A common location for this to occur is underarms.
In babies, they may get the infection in the mouth or on their bottom around the diaper areas.
In adults, yeast infections become more common the older you get. The elderly can have yeast infections around their dentures, the overweight can get them under the breast, and around the lower abdomen,or other skin folds.
Most of these yeast infections are nothing to worry about and can clear up with over-the-counter, or prescription medication. Candidiasis may spread throughout the entire body. Of those cases, as many as 75% of patients die.
Common vaginal yeast infections can cause critical illness if not treated properly.
If you have a weakened immune system caused by diseases like AIDS, or if you have undergone cancer treatments - infections can occur throughout the entire body - and can be life threatening.
In this case, the blood and brain are most frequently affected, but the eyes, kidneys, and heart may also be affected. Medical papers report that the yeast infections may spread to the lungs, the liver, and the spleen.
