Who would have believed a little kitten could make me so sick... ![]() Cat Scratch Disease -- Also known as: "Cat-Scratch Fever, Cat Scratch Adenitis, Cat-Scratch-Oculoglandular Syndrome" ![]() I had just adopeted a kitty from the pound and brought her home. I guess she got freaked out and scratched me pretty good on the wrist, about two weeks later, I was in the hospital with "Cat-Scratch Disease". You may be familiar with Ted Nugent's song "Cat Scratch Fever" -- I was aware of the song, but I had no idea it was a real medical condition. I later learned that it is rather common, effecting millions of people each year. After my kitty scratched me, I really didn't give it much thought. It was sore and stuff, but then, I started to get a headache, I got chills, a couple of days later my back started aching, finally I got a high fever, and stomach pain; I went to the hospital. At the hospital they began running some tests, the doctor asked me if I had a kitty -- I said yes, and he said that -- "there was the source of my problem". He said "Kittens carry bacteria in their blood that can make us very sick, and little kittens are more likely to carry the cat scratch bacteria in their blood, and are more likely to transmit the disease rather than full-grown cats." A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that fleas serve as a mode of transmission among cats, another study showed that cats could be infected with intradermal inoculation using flea feces. The cat scratch disease is passed through a contaminated cat scratch wound, like the one I got on my wrist. It can take 7-10 days for symptoms to appear, however they may take as long a 60 days to completely take hold of you. If you get this "Cat Scratch Fever", the prognosis is favorable. The condition usually resolves spontaneously, with or without treatment, in one month. If the patent has serious immune conditions such as HIV, Acute encephalopathy (which is a generalized dysfunction of the brain) can occur. Meow! -- Blog entry from - Waco, TX (2011) ![]()
