Burns have typical and atypical patterns—typical patterns result from unintentional burns while atypical patterns may be a sign of physical abuse. Typical burns (from spilling hot liquid, for example) tend to occur in exposed areas such as the arms, face, and neck. Atypical burns may occur in unexposed areas such as the buttocks. Burns involving entire hands and feet are also not typical, neither are third-degree burns involving a very small, focused area (resembling, for example, a cigarette).
Burns are caused by exposure to thermal, electrical, or chemical sources. Thermal burns occur when hot metals, scalding liquids, steam, or flames come in contact with the skin. Exposure to electrical current causes electrical burns, and contact with caustic chemicals causes chemical burns. Prolonged exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays or to other sources of radiation (such as from tanning booths) can also cause burns. The most serious burns are usually caused by scalding hot or flammable liquids, and fires. Exposure to chemicals and electrical currents also cause severe injury and damage to the skin.
Risk Factors:
Preventive Care
The following actions have been shown to lower the incidence of burns: The following steps may help reduce the severity of a burn once it occurs: When diagnosing a burn, a healthcare practitioner will evaluate the depth and extent of the damage, the degree of pain, the amount of swelling, and signs of infection. They will classify the burn based on the depth and extent of the injury. Burns that cover a significant portion of the body, burns associated with smoke inhalation, burns resulting from electrical injuries, and burns associated with suspected physical abuse are treated as emergencies and require hospitalization. In the emergency room, all wounds are wrapped with sterile towels and patients receive oxygen (either through a mask or tube) and fluids (some patients require intravenous fluids). Patients are also evaluated for associated injuries (such as from physical abuse). Physicians may also conduct a biopsy to determine whether infection is present in the wound.
If you have read the classic book "One Thousand and One Nights" you know that Arabs believe a mole is a sign of beauty. That's where the phrase "beauty mark" comes from. Well, having a mole on your face, and joined eyebrows might have been attractive a thousand years ago, in Arabia, but not today; not in America. Removing a mole in the past, meant that you had to have a doctor remove the mole with a laser, or scalpel or a freezing technique called "cryotherapy". The doctor would cut the mole off, or burn it off, or freeze it off - often times, leaving you with a bigger scar, than the mole. Now there is a new mole removal procedure, called Dermatend. This Dermatend cream can remove moles from anywhere on your body without plastic surgery. Dermatend removes moles, without pain, or scarring, and it usually works as fast as overnight. Nothing works better at removing moles, than Dermatend. To use it, just apply the mole remover as directed. Wash the area with warm soapy water and then apply the cream to the top of the mole. Then wait. 24 hours later, remove the bandage. The mole should be less than half the size from the night before. If that is the case, leave the mole uncovered and it will dry up in a few days; if the mole has not shrunk from the night before, reapply the cream and recover with a new bandage. Try again the next day. By day three, the mole should be dried up, and it should fall off shortly thereafter.
